Workshops - 2nd International Design Week 2012

Spaghetti Structures - 2 days. Wednesday & Thursday(16-17 May)
(W1)

In this workshop student construct models for various types of structures with a certain amount of spaghetti. Although spaghetti doesn't seem like strong building materials, students can build strong structures using them. Start to practice buildings or other structures by testing different basic shapes such as squares and triangles. During the construction, they realize that individual parts are always pushing and pulling each other. Structures keep on standing because some parts are being pulled (tension members) at the same time as others are being pushed (compression members). During this workshop, it is expected that students will develop an understanding from the importance of the shape in constructing strong structures.
