Ph.D. Program in Architecture
General Information
The Doctoral (Ph.D.) Program in Architecture is a research–based program aimed at fundamental studies at the forefront of architecture and the built environment. It is designed to provide thorough training in the theory and practice of architecture and other related fields to architecture.
Assesment:
Graduate students are required to take 8 (21 credit hours) courses and submit a Ph.D. Dissertation to complete the Ph.D. Program in Architecture. At the same time, prior to the appointment of a dissertation defense jury, the candidate must have published (or have had received acceptance for publication) at least one paper dealing with issues related to his/her dissertation research or a paper within his/her field of study in a journal referenced in the “Art & Humanities Citation Index”, “Science Citation Index” or in the “Social Sciences Citation Index” or their expanded versions. In the Graduate program, the medium of instruction in all courses is English and all written work is assessed at standard international levels of academic English.
Admission Requirements:
The candidates for admission to the Doctoral (Ph.D.) Program in Architecture should have an M.S. in Architecture or an equivalent degree in a relevant discipline. The candidates must satisfy the requirements of the Institute of Graduate Studies and Research of the university as well as the Departmental requirements such as GRE (Graduate Record Exam) for foreigners and nationals of TRNC, LES (Graduate Education Exam conducted by ÖSYM for Turkish nationals) and English Proficiency Exam (exams either conducted by local authorities or international exams such as TOEFL or IELTS will be considered). It is required to score 550 or above in TOEFL and 7 in IELTS.
Candidates are required to apply to the Registrar’s Office by completing and submitting the Application Form for Graduate Studies’ attaching to it necessary documents specified in the application form within the dates of application announced.
In addition to the documents specified in the application form, the Department of Architecture also requires:
- A Portfolio [ Content of the portfolio includes all research and architectural projects produced in the undergraduate courses and other professional skills and performances (in A4, A3 hardcopy or CD format)]
- A curriculum vitae (CV),
- Reference Letter(s),
- A Copy of the last Diploma,
- A Transcript,
- A Letter of proposal,
- A letter of Intention (in which the field and reasons of study of the candidates are clearly stated.)
- Master thesis abstract
- Scientific publication (if any)

In the program, there are totally six elective courses which are highly suggested to be taken according to the research topic/field of the candidate from the Department of Architecture and the other related departments’ graduate courses through an interdisciplinary approach. Each student should be registered to the ARCH 600 in each consecutive semester after completing all of the PhD courses and passing PhD Qualification Exam successfully. It is compulsory to enter the PhD Qualification exam when all the doctoral courses are successfully completed within 4 semesters. It is also compulsory to be registered to the courses:
Arch 501 (INTERDISCIPLINARY WORKSHOP) and Arch 505 (ADVANCED RESEARCH METHODS) for the student who:
-does not have the master degree from EMU Department of Architecture Graduate Program and,
-did not get any graduate courses equivalent to the mentioned courses in her/his previous school.
The Period of Program:
The Ph.D. program is carried out and completed in certain periods. Accordingly, Ph.D. program is 5 years full-time (or equivalent Part-time).
