M.Sc. in Architecture MS in Architecture ProgramCourse DescriptionsARCH 501 INTERDISCIPLINARY WORKSHOPA compulsory course offered to all graduate students at an interdisciplinary level. Architecture being in the intersection of different study areas, the interdisciplinary character of the professional studies should be employed. Thus, the aim of this compulsory course is to guide the students to carry out certain researches around their different interest areas while the theme being a constant within one semester. Different workshop methods are applied in achieving a mutual end product taking inputs from different disciplines and viewing the theme from different perspectives. The role of the instructor is to coordinate the workshop process and to act as a mediator. Lecturers and experts are invited to support the fundamentals of the concerned sub-themes / areas. By the end of this process students are expected to gain the ability to work and produce as a group.ARCH 502 SPECIAL STUDIES IThe purpose of the special studies course is to develop a student`s knowledge on a particular area related to his or her subject of investigation. Very often, before embarking on the main subject matter of his or her thesis a student requires knowledge and information needed to make the transition from course work to individual research. Special studies courses are tailored to the student’s individual need and are therefore essentially different for general courses. The thesis supervisor of the student may offer the course to the student or the supervisor may request another tutor (with the relevant expertise) to offer such a course for the supervisee. The special studies course can be offered to a student only after the proposal for the thesis (MArch or PhD) has been made. ARCH 505 ADVANCED RESEARCH METHODSThe main aim of this module is to provide an introduction to the process / methods of research plan formulation and implementation and the appraisal of completed pieces of research. On successful completion of this module, all students will have developed their skills in: research planning and data collection, quantitative and qualitative analysis, problem identification and problem solving, written, oral and graphic communication; and also will have developed their knowledge about: traditions of thought and its impact on design and planning thought and method, multi-disciplinary research methods and techniques (particularly social science research), essay and dissertation writing and presentation; and their appreciation of and respect for values and attitudes regarding the issues of: efficiency in the use of resources and professional ethics.
