The 6th International Design Week of the Faculty of Architecture of Eastern Mediterranean University (IntDW2016-EMU) is going to take place between 16-20th of May 2016 under the collaboration of the Faculty of Architecture and the Design Club of Eastern Mediterranean University.   Since 2010, Design Week activities are being organized around a central theme for the purpose of drawing attention to significant issues in that field/topic through the participation of selected key professionals, artists and academics that works in the realm of architecture and design. This helps the generation of an interdisciplinary platform where exchange of ideas and experiences, and stimulation of production at an international yet diverse platform take place. Another aim of the Design Week has been to strengthen the contribution of students of architecture and interior architecture in the organization of the event through the strong voice of the Design Club, an association of design students.

The organization team of the 6th International Design Week /EMU announces this year's theme as 3S: "SOUND-SPACE-SOUL" where the relationship and analogy between music/sound art/sound design and space as well as the spirit of place and its influence on the body and soul shall be explored in many aspects through the contribution of academicians, artists and other professionals from various disciplines.

This year we are honored to host the Turkish architect, planner, industrial product designer and artist Yılmaz Zenger, who currently designs furniture, mechanics and electronics as well as spending time on lecturing and organizing workshops to contribute to architectural education.  His presence will contribute to the event through panel discussions on the first day and a workshop organization

for architecture and interior architecture students entitled To Sculpt a negative form, the sound of space where students shall be encouraged to design and build real scale furnitures.

The Turkish Cypriot painter, poet, writer, designer, film maker, art critic Ümit İnatçı, Dean of Faculty of Art and Communication, EMU will be the third panelist at the opening of the event.

Besides, the panel discussions, the 6th International Design Week is enriched with many activities that shall hopefully broaden the outlook of students not only towards architecture, design but life.  One of the most exciting benefactors of the event is the Turkish performance artist Burcu Yılmaz, who would be organizing a workshop on Soundpainting - Sensing the Space through Movement and Sound.

Besides these international names, the event shall be hosting local academicians, artists, tai chi and yoga instructors in order to enrich the soul of the event.  Amongst these participants are local artist Sibel Kemal Uzun  from Girne American University, Turkish architect and academician Lerzan Aras from Lefke European University,  Turkish architect and academician Devrim Yücel Besim  from Cyprus International University (CIU), Turkish Cypriot Tai Chi and Qigong instructor Tarık Tekman, Turkish Cypriot Yoga Instructor Anıl Özgürün, the Turkish Cypriot architect/academician Seyit Ermiyagil from Eastern Mediterranean University, the Interdisciplinary Workshop group of the Graduate Program of the Department of Architecture of EMU contributed by Kemal Kasapoglu – Olgica Grcheva and  Kamyar Lotfi, Kaveh Abdaie, Mohammad Haghighi Fard, Sobhan Hashemzadeh as well as the students of EMU Dance Club Hakki Ulucay and Beste Demirelli who would join the event with a Salsa workshop teaching the soul and spirit of Latin Dance to the students of architecture and interior architecture.

WS1 )  Yılmaz ZENGER :  TO SCULPT A NEGATIVE FORM, THE SOUND OF SPACE

The aim of the workshop is to sculpt a negative form, a space by attaching materials and using methods on solid forms.

Computers and drafts are not allowed. Only sketches. No oppurtunity to undo actions, similiar to the conditions of sclpting on a stone block.

We will use strophor blocks and very unusual processes that can be under complete or partial control.

Project has a second side, a different approach to the signal noise ratio, to use both signal and noise as partners instead of opposites and use them to create a sound electronically from city space or any other spaces

WS2 )  Sibel KEMAL UZUN: COLOR, AND THE SPACE IN BETWEEN. THE ART OF LETTING GO

This 3 day is designed to help you with finding your voice and gaining freedom in paint. We explore all of the characteristics that make a great painting: intent, paint, color, mark making, drawing, shape, edge, methods and materials and we do it at the fun sizes, 50×50 to 40×40. This will start with the same processes as in all my classes, small studies to larger studies. The paintings are done with acrylics, tempera.

WS3 ) Burcu YILMAZ: SOUNDPAINTING - SENSING THE SPACE THROUGH MOVEMENT AND SOUND

Soundpainting is the universal multidisciplinary live composing sign language for musicians, actors, dancers, and visual artists. In this workshop, we will explore the relationship between sound, movement and space through using soundpainting. What does it mean to compose in the instant? How sound and movement help us to feel the space? What is the limits of space? The language will help us to think about these questions while we enjoy collective creation in the instant, improvise and also find our own creativity in the space. The workshop is open to everyone who would like to be part of this unique atmosphere.

WS4 )  Devrim BESİM: SHOOTING AND SHARING THE SOUNDS OF  THE CITY

The sounds of the city (Screams, Whispers and Silence) will be discovered and shared with an installation. The experiences of the workshop will be transformed into a concentrated exhibition space.

The workshop will have 3 steps. After a short brief on the workshop the first step is to visit the different parts of the city for shooting (one may to the industrial area, one is to the sea side, and one may to Varosha area). The second step is discussing, editing and printing of the photos. The last step is an organization process for displaying

WS5 ) Tarık TEKMAN : TAI CHI

Tai Chi is an exercise that improves balance, flexibility, cardiovascular health and the immune system. It is also called "moving meditation" because we practice slow, fluid and circular Qigong and Martial Arts movements that originate from our centre, with a relaxed body and mind. Detailed information about Tai Chi and its benefits are available at tariktekman.com

Participants of this 1,5 hour workshop will learn simple Tai Chi exercises that will help them get balanced, rooted, calm and energized.

WS6 ) Lerzan ARAS: GENIUS LOCI AND THE SPIRIT OF OUR DAILY LIFE

Our Daily life is important, sometimes it has a routine, but sometimes we face surprises. The daily life has an invisible but very sensible relationship with our environment, and therefore with design in general, which we can call the "spirit". It is directly connected to the places where we spend our times. In this frame a discussion and maybe a little survey with the students will enable them to feel the abstract boundaries or the free zones of design in our life, which we actually base on more concrete criteria. Why not change it a little bit??

WS7 ) Hakki ULUCAY, Beste DEMİRELLİ: SALSA, SOUL AND SPIRIT

Dance in Space

WS8 ) Seyit ERMİYAGİL : SPIRIT OF THE SKY * 6TH ANNUAL KITE DESIGN

This workshop is organized to design kites which are tethered objects (not flying object) which will exhibited by using light and sound to generate the SPIRIT of the SKY.

WS9 ) Anıl ÖZGÜRGÜN: YOGA

WS 10) INTERDISIPLINARY WORKSHOP TEAM I/EMU: Kemal Kasapoglu – Olgica Crcheva CREATING URBAN INSTALLATION "ART A SELFIE"

Improving quality of public spaces through urban art installations.Urban art installations especially interactive once are encouraging users of public spaces to get in touch with different forms of urban art and at the same time they are inviting the users

to become a part of creating the urban art.

Art A Selfie is an installation which will encourage users of public spaces to express their creativity, ability and senses through making patterns by choosing the offered colorful threads that will remain on the proposed frame structure with different shapes (fixed or free-

movable). The fixed element will symbolize the physical borders by defining the initials borders of the public space. The movable ones will create flexible borders which are abstract borders and to created by users. Moreover the user profile can be observed to see how far can

they go by creating phisical borders either just by using surface areas to cover or creating a

chaos and try to pass through it.

With such an approach, users can create and put their own input and take a selfie with their

artistic expressions.

In this manner, users are the creators of the urban art and are participating in spreading the  awareness of the existence of the urban art in public spaces, especially by the act of taking selfies, posting them on the social media, sharing it with others, commenting, approving or

criticizing the idea of the installation.

This installation will be in touch with all the visual and tactile senses and will contribute in

providing a stopping point in the public spaces.
