ARCH 591     Architectural Design I
This studio builds upon the experience of the previous design studios at Bachelor Degree level, in the sense that increasingly complex design problems are addressed. It denotes generic ideas of the project satisfying aesthetic and technical requirements, having adequate knowledge of the history and theories of architecture as well as relevant arts, technologies and human sciences, urban design, planning and the skills involved in the planning process, understanding of the relationship between people and buildings, between buildings and environment. The project will be guided at an interdisciplinary approach.

Theories of architectural design; process of building design; process of building design according to local and central building codes; project submission conditions; building codes and architectural design phases; Project management processes in preliminary projects and solutions; team studies in architectural design processes; organization types for building construction; contracts in architectural design processes and contract documentation will be main contents of this project. Projects will encompass small-scale public buildings on both urban and open sites. The general objective of this studio is to develop a student’s abilities to interrelate multiple considerations and to expand their conceptual capabilities. Further consideration of skills and techniques in drawing and building craft will be addressed.

ARCH 541     Integrated Systems in Architecture
A course which emphasizes the Building design and construction process as a total system problem: overall structural planning and sequence of assembly, review of design for constructability; structural systems and their components; Structural thought and structural systems in architecture; selection of structural material type and system; arrangement of structural members, integration of building elements with the other sub-systems of building.

ARCH 551     Architecture and Building Economy
Financial planning, including cash flow analysis and return on equity models; comparison of alternatives; architecture and economy; the development cycle of a building and cost phases, conceptual design in architecture and building cost decision; factors effecting cost of the building: including building size, building shape, plan geometry, height, climate; Quality consideration; aesthetic consideration; structural consideration; life cycle costing and energy consideration; quantity take-off methods.

ARCH 561     Architectural Theory and Criticism
This course explores how architects and theorists have attempted to conceptualize the essence of architecture and deals with researches into architectural thought and philosophies which have implications for design disciplines.  Through readings and discussions, students encounter the varied kinds of critical thought that have been applied to the field of architecture throughout history. The purpose here is to understand different/conflicting paradigms within the architectural discourse in a comprehensive/generalized/ extensive way, and to be able to conduct alternative readings over theoretical texts.

ARCH 581     Computer Applications in Architecture
A course which introduces the Information systems and information technology in architecture, Components of information systems in conceptual dimension: Database systems (DBS), Management Information Systems (MIS), Decision Support Systems (DSS), Expert Systems (ES), Office Automation Systems (OAS), The responsibilities of architects through the building production process, computer aided architectural design and rendering, computer aided modeling, computer applications for architectural database, and documentation; Computer-based models in various phases of building production process (pre-design, design, project delivery, construction and operation stages), Computer integrated construction, Integrated systems for construction management, Automation systems for architectural practices.

ARCH 592     Architectural Design II
This is the design studio aiming to develop first phase of the architectural design project which would be completed in Final Term Project. In this studio, the projects will be produced on an intermediate level, bridging the abstract issues of form and ideology with the programmatic realities of the built environment. Emphasis will be placed on developing a further understanding and expansion of architectural principles including spatial definition, formal composition, program analysis and organization and basic building structures and detailing as they relate to specific site contexts and activities. Urban space problems and solutions; building urban space interaction; human urban space interaction; development regulations and urban patterns; urban land development; conditions for urban environmental preservation; architectural programming; processes of architectural programming; social, political, economic, technological and ecological solutions in architectural design processes; interdisciplinary organizations with planners, urban designers, landscape designers and engineers; obtaining preliminary projects, will be main contents of the project.

ARCH 542     Building Technology and Structural Design
The primary mission of architects is sustainability in architecture, which considers environmental criteria. introduction of the theory and concepts related to sustainability in building technology; to examine them at the scales of building material, element and overall building; definition of performance requirements and their relationship with the available technologies; to apply the theoretical knowledge of construction design to practice through case studies and assignments, definition of sub-systems and their integration; methods for efficient use of available natural and artificial resources; to minimize the negative impact of building on the environment; to compare the sustainable solution options; evaluation of the solutions with positive impact directly on user and indirectly on environment by means of the various criteria of sustainability; to discuss the national and international standards and regulations.

ARCH 562     People-Environment Studies
Introduction to the range of research into man- environment relationships which have implications for design disciplines; theories, models, approaches and important concepts in man-environment studies in regards to anthropological, ecological, sociological, cultural issues. An attempt to understand the relationships of man and physical environment, the relationships of building and environment, and the spaces in between buildings and their relationships with the scale and needs of human beigns; understanding of the role of architect and the significance of the profession of architecture in emergence of projects considering social dynamics; responding to natural environment and resources, and respecting to historical and cultural heritage.

ARCH 594     Legal and Managerial Aspects of  Architectural Practice
This course introduces the fundamentals of planning, and Environment of Management, project Planning including organizational planning and goal setting, strategy formulation and implementation, managerial decision making. Project organization including fundamentals of organizing, using structural design to achieve strategic goals, change and development, human resource management, managing diverse employees; Leading including foundations of behavior in organizations, leadership, motivation, communicating, and teamwork; Controlling (foundations of quality control, information systems and technology, operations and service management). Planning and control of large-scale projects; including leveling, smoothing, and scheduling of recourses.

Arch 590       Final Term Project                   
Reassessment of preliminary project obtained in Architectural Design II according to site regulations; studies on working drawings; interdisciplinary integration by participation of related engineering disciplines in juries; building element and architectural detail design based on economic, technological and ecological parameters. The end-product should be an integrated design / a complete project including construction documents and detail solutions at all scales. It is important to demonstrate the attainment of the professional standard required to practice within the rich context of the architectural discipline.
