Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Architecture Faculty organized the time honored EMU International Design Week for the 8th time. EMU International Design Week aims to approach design as a requisite vision and cultural factor in order to create a better world by questioning, re-thinking and giving rise to thought. With a unique perspective, the Design Week activities aim for students, academicians, designers, artists and those who show interest in the modern learning model of EMU Architecture Faculty to focalize design. With its rich program including workshops, conferences, seminars and presentations, the 8th EMU International Design Week is taking firm steps towards becoming a global design event for students who follow modern design developments, designers and anyone who believes in the vital importance of design.
Global Designers in EMU International Design Week
EMU’s Architecture Faculty is preparing to host an important activity to cover design which has gathered global momentum in recent years. The annual “EMU International Design Week” organized with the initiatives of EMU Architecture Faculty and by EMU Rector’s Office is taking place with the theme “existHence” this year. Doyennes of the Architecture World took part in the events organized for the 8th EMU International Design Week. Amsterdam, Shanghai and Hong Kong based world renowned design office UNStudio’s Urban Design Unit Head Dana Behrman and Gürhan Bakırküre the founder of İstanbul based Bakırküre Architects shared their real-life based innovative design approaches and practices with the audience.
More than 600 Students Attended
Kerem Yazgan and Devrim Çimen who are providing designs to the world from their offices in Ankara made the closing speech of the Design Week moderated by ODTÜ Architecture Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Arif Güven Sargın. Apart from Yazgan and Çimen, international architecture and design schools were also present during the events with the participation of their academic staff members as well as their students. In this context, total of 19 workshops took place. Moreover, more than 600 students were actively associated with design in other architecture and design schools both domestically or abroad. Cyprus International University, Near East University, Final International Universities, Yıldız Technical University, Mimar Sinan Fine Arts Architecture, İstanbul Technical University, Bilecik Şeyh Edip Ali University, Özyeğin University, Mustafa Kemal University, Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey Industry Trade University, Başkent University and Tirana Polytechnic University attended the event hosted by EMU Architecture Faculty.
Production and Learning as a Basis
Importance of associating the participants with Cyprus’s rich history, cultural and social structure was touched on. Sharing the rich cultural heritage of Cyprus by means of designs constituted another aspect of the aims of the Design Week. EMU Architecture Faculty Vice Dean Assoc. Prof. Dr. Banu Tevfikler Çavuşoğlu emphasized the significant role of Design Week events on design education. Assoc. Prof. Dr. S. Müjdem Vural mentioned about continuous production and production based learning process as a teaching model where EMU_IntDW’s workshops and various knowledge sharing methods can be applied with simultaneous applications.
Famagusta City Tour
Various events such as guided tour of Famagusta Walled city, opening cocktail under the auspices of Famagusta Municipality as well as a beach party where all the attendees enjoyed being together, and sharing knowledge were also organized in addition to the academic sessions during the Design Week. With the pleasure arose from the organizations, especially students were able to gain the motivation to successfully complete the academic year.
