FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE

STRATEGIC PLANNING REPORT

2018-2021

INTRODUCTION

This report, covering the "Strategic Plan of the Faculty of Architecture" has been prepared following a methodological (strategic planning) process that was followed in the former reports of Departments, Faculty and the University. Through this strategic planning approach, it would be possible to develop an understanding and vision across a whole range of academic and administrative issues that go far beyond conventional approaches, taking a comprehensive and integrated approach over long time horizons for the future of the Faculty.

The underlying intention of applying a strategic planning approach is firstly, to identify what is valuable in the Faculty through SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) analysis method which is a model forming the basis for virtually all formalized strategy formulation processes; then, to put forward the reasons for the existence of the Faculty (the mission); followed by identifying the envisaged future of the Faculty (the vision); defining strategic goals and objectives from short-term to long-term; clarifying strategies, activities and projects to define the ways of achieving these goals and objectives.

The Faculty of Architecture believes that it is critical to have members of the organization to actively participate in the strategic planning process to increase their motivation and enthusiasm for realizing the attractive and inspiring common vision for the future. One workshop activity has been held on 7th June, 2018, within the framework of a Faculty Board meeting, which is a board composed of members of the Faculty who are representatives of the general composition of the Faculty, including the administrative academic staff. The aim of the workshop was, firstly, to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the Faculty (through the SWOT analysis method); then, based on the findings of the SWOT, to determine the mission and vision of the Faculty, followed by goals and strategies.

The workshop was planned to be done in one single group, coordinated by Prof. Dr. Özgür Dinçyürek, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture. Relevant documents (a professional strategic plan of a governmental organization as a sample, EMU Strategic Plan 2017-2022, EMU Strategic Plan 2012-2015, Faculty Strategic Plan 2012-2015, Department of Architecture Strategic Plan 2016-2019, Department of Interior Architecture Strategic Plan 2016-2019) have been prepared and sent to the Faculty Board members prior to the workshop.

The workshop had been realized successfully. After the workshop, the findings (Appendix ii) has been sent to the members to be used for their further study about the 'Goals and Strategies' section of the plan. Results of all the work and effort, including the workshop, feedback (both individual and in groups) have been put together to form the Strategic Plan of the Faculty of Architecture.

VISION STATEMENT OF FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE

Committed to the values of respect; cooperation and communication; creativity and innovation; community services and leadership; pursuit of excellence; public accountability, prestige and diversity; and professional ethics, the vision of the EMU Faculty of Architecture is to provide leadership in design education with internationally accredited programs through its distinguished academic infrastructure and supportive milieu for students to orient themselves and acquire knowledge and skills needed towards a creative and fruitful career.

MISSION OF FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE

The mission of the EMU Faculty of Architecture is to develop distinguished curricula in all its Departments in accordance with international standards, to provide opportunities for an interdisciplinary design education to its diverse student community, to encourage and educate the future architects/interior architects/designers as innovative, creative, culture sensitive and environment responsive professionals with high critical thinking abilities and with up-to-date knowledge of technologies used in their fields; who can share and apply their knowledge within and with other disciplines, and who are open to new possibilities and collaborations.

GOALS AND STRATEGIES

After the results of workshop findings' including SWOT analysis and the development of vision and mission further work was done by groups and individuals of the faculty board members for identifying goals and strategies through the results of workshop and previous Faculty Strategic Plan. No selection process was followed during the workshop. Instead, all suggestions of the participants have been included in the list. These goals have been grouped, listed and ranked as long-term, mid-term and short-term, as in the following tables. Finally, among them, the short-term goals – according to both the mission / vision put forward and the priorities of the Faculty – have been selected to be included in the action plan. Final editing was conducted by the Dean Administration. Considering the opportunities and challenges as well as the goals of the current Departments, and based on the vision and mission (which has been developed through participation of the faculty board members) of the Faculty, Goals of the Faculty of Architecture are classified under the values of QUALITY, MOTIVATION, COOPERATION, DIVERSITY and ETHICS:
