Strategic Plan






The vision of the EMU Faculty of Architecture is providing leadership in design education with internationally accredited programs both at national and international levels through its distinguished academic infrastructure and supportive milieu for students to orient themselves and acquire knowledge and skills needed towards a creative and fruitful career.
The Faculty of Architecture is committed to the values of mutual respect; cooperation and communication; creativity and innovation; community services and leadership; pursuit of excellence; public accountability, prestige and diversity and professional ethics.


The Faculty's mission is to develop distinguished curriculums in all its Departments in accordance with international standards, to provide opportunities for an interdisciplinary design education to its diverse student community, to encourage and educate the future architects/interior architects/designers as innovative, creative, culture sensitive and environment responsive professionals with high critical thinking abilities and with up-to-date knowledge of technologies used in their fields; who can share and apply their knowledge within and with other disciplines, and who are open to new possibilities and collaborations with other disciplines in processes of both learning and professional practice. 


The Faculty of Architecture with its high quality, multi-national staff, who has different thoughts and backgrounds together with young committed research/teaching assistants and a diverse student population, is faced with many opportunities and challenges. 


It is a great opportunity for the Faculty of Architecture to be located in North Cyprus and in Gazimağusa for several reasons:
- The island in general and the city of Gazimağusa in particular provide an excellent ground for architectural education with the remarkable remains of historic and cultural heritage that they house;
- Although at the time-being the TRNC does not benefit from the accession of ‘Cyprus’ to EU, the probability of coming to a solution on the Cyprus conflict would carry this part of the island to EU, which would ease the development of international agreements with European universities and the accession to Socrates/Erasmus Programs.
- The multi-cultural characteristics of the island provide a favorable ground for architectural /design education to a certain extent.
The multi-cultural composition of the students and staff, sustaining an international interaction.
Increasing interest for the Departments of the Faculty due to the ‘Golden Age of Design’ in the world provides favorable conditions for growth and development of the Faculty.
The initiated and continuing relations / cooperation with international academic bodies / institutions (ie. existing academic memorandums of co-operations; membership of MIDEKON, EAAE, Dept. Arch. with MOBBIG; Dept. Int.Arch. with IIDA and IFI) as well as other universities which would pave the way for further cooperation with similar institutions. 
Growth in the number of international students: Over the past few years number of international students have continued to grow significantly (especially from Iran and Nigeria). There is a potential to increase these numbers further by raising the EMU’s and the Faculty of Architecture’s profile internationally.
Gained full accreditation (of 6 years) of the Department of Architecture by MIAK, contributing to the reputation of the Faculty.


Coping with the threat of decreasing number of students, i.e. Coping with the tendency of students in terms of preferring Universities in Turkey and new EU member countries with ECTS system.
Coping with the increasing number of students.
Coping with the declining infrastructure within the Faculty.
Study abroad programs with regard to faculty involvement.
Coping with growth with new departments and programs.
Coping with the demands of the faculty and the students.
Coping with the difficulties of being in a low quality physical and cultural environment.
Coping with being far from contemporary examples of architecture and design.

Considering these opportunities and challenges that the Faculty of Architecture is faced with and the goals and strategies defined by the Departments, the Strategic Goals & Goals and Strategies of the Faculty of Architecture have been up-to-dated and re-identified (i.e. revised from 2004 and 2006 reports), as in the following.


Considering the opportunities and challenges as well as the goals of the current Departments, and in parallel with the vision and mission of the Faculty, Strategic Goals of the Faculty of Architecture are classified under the values of QUALITY, MOTIVATION, COOPERATION, DIVERSITY and ETHICS:

To be able to reach the above-listed Strategic Goals, the targets and strategies of the Faculty of Architecture have been defined and listed based on a short-term (ST), mid-term (MT) and long-term (LT) framework. Thus, although the Strategic Goals of the Faculty of Architecture will define the ‘road map’ for the years 2012-2015, accomplishment of these targets and their strategies at varied degrees will  be in short-term (6-12 months), mid-term (12-24 months) and  long-term (24-36 months) phases.



SG1Enhancing the Quality of Architectural/Design Education in all Departments of the Faculty.TARGET 1.1: Supporting the Departments to provide a more international and multi-dimensional education.
      1. Getting in contact with well-established national/international academic institutions to set up future collaborations for joint undergraduate/graduate programs.
      2. Studying other well-established national/international academic institutions` curricula for the improvement of the curricula of our Departments.




TARGET 1.2: Establishing the framework and infrastructure to set up new programs.
  1. Completing the already-started process of setting up new programs.
  2. Following the new trends in architectural / design education.
  3. Defining the needs of the society/country for further programs.




TARGET 1.3: Providing conditions for the Department of Industrial Design to continue its level of quality until the Department is completely closed.
  1. Following-up the termly programs of all Departments to guide the DoID.
TARGET 1.4: Revising the student-instructor ratio by increasing academic staff number in order to improve contemporary student–centred design education.
      1. Following all national/international documents to be in similar levels of students-instructor ratio.
      2. Continuing the negotiations with the Rector`s office to keep-up with the existing ratios.




TARGET 1.5: Balancing teaching staff's academic load for achieving opportunities for further research and practice.1.5.1. Guiding & following-up Department`s administrations for load distribution every semester.ST/MT/LT
TARGET 1.6: Supporting the Departments to increase the number of online courses and course blogs.

1.6.1. Searching for online course opportunities from other academic institutions.

1.6.2. Contacting with the Online Education Institute to guide the Departments.



TARGET 1.7: Developing both practice/profession based and research oriented mindset.

1.7.1. Improving / providing opportunities of recruiting part-time academic staff who are active and successful in the professional field.

1.7.2. Activate the existing Centers in our Faculty.

1.7.3. Providing necessary conditions for academic staff to take part in design competitions.

1.7.4. Setting up a new academic position between full-time and part-time staff for supporting academic staff to take part in professional grounds.






TARGET 1.8: Creating new teaching conditions by promoting new ways of teaching and learning.

1.8.1. Supporting the Departments with their online course proposals.

1.8.2. Following-up the trends of education in design and recent developments in higher education and organizing in-service training activities / continuous education for the staff.



SG2Gaining international accreditation / validation in all Departments.TARGET 2.1: Achieving international standards, in-line with the directives/rules/ regulations of Bologna Process of EU, EAAE, MIDEKON, IFI, CIDA.

2.1.1. Increasing communication and collaboration possibilities with the international organizations.

      1. Following-up the rules and regulations of the institutions of which the Faculty is a member.
      2. Following-up the developments within YOK and/through MIDEKON.





TARGET 2.2: Supporting all Departments at all levels to gain international accreditation.
  1. Monitoring the programs / curriculums periodically to meet the new and future demands and to fulfill the requirements of accreditations/validations.
      1. Encouraging and supporting the Departments in making necessary revisions of their existing curriculum to be adapted to the European Higher Education System on the way of educating high quality professional designers and life-long learners.

        2.2.3. Developing projects for receiving funds / getting economic support for accreditation from the University / Government.
      1. Setting-up all required academic & physical conditions for achieving accreditation/validation.
SG3Developing projects to support educational, social and research activities of the Faculty.TARGET 3.1: Encouraging academic staff, research assistants and students to be involved in projects (design &  research).

3.1.1. Completing the preparation process of Circulating Capital Regulations of the Faculty.

3.1.2. Contacting with the central and local authorities and/or NGOs to find out their needs for research and design.

3.1.3. Setting up a framework for academic staff to attract researchers (graduate students) to be part of their newly established and/or ongoing research projects on varying research topics.

3.3.3. Increasing contact and communication with other academic institutions (national / international) to set up joint research projects.

3.3.4. Encouraging research centers to establish contemporary research projects based on the needs of the society.

TARGET 3.4: Improving professional practice opportunities for academic staff and students.

3.4.1. Setting up a new academic position between full-time and part-time staff for supporting academic staff to take part in professional grounds. (TARGET 14.3)

3.4.2. Promoting and activating the Circulating Capital Unit of the Faculty.

3.4.3. Communicating with Chamber of Architects about the possibilities of our academic staff being involved in professional design for the community.

TARGET 3.5: Completing the process of publication of the Faculty Publications that have been initiated in 2011-2012 Academic Year.

3.5.1. Setting up a follow-up mechanism for the already made proposals.

3.5.2. Setting up the necessary conditions for the printing and publishing process.

TARGET 3.6:  Establishing an indexed International e-Journal of the Faculty

3.6.1. Defining the focus and publishing rules/frequency of the Journal.

3.6.2. Setting up a concept for the continuous flow of the journal.

3.6.3. Establishing the online infrastructure for the e-journal.

3.6.4. Introducing the journal into the international indexes.

SG4Improving the physical conditions and infrastructure of the Faculty.TARGET 4.1: Continuing the physical improvement works in the Faculty.

4.1.1. Completing the projects for the old studios (E studios) and finding funds to realize them.

4.1.2. Covering the top of the amphitheatre of the Faculty.

4.1.3. Re-painting the Coloured Building.

4.1.4. Completing works for the new seminar room in the Office Building.

TARGET 4.2: Finalizing the physical improvements of the colored building. 

4.2.1. Completing the painting works.

4.2.2. Re-doing the painted areas on the floors.

4.2.3. Implementation of the new designs of exhibition spaces / elements for the circulation areas.

TARGET 4.3: Developing projects and looking for financial support at the Rectorate level for providing better physical conditions and educational infrastructure (studios/teaching aids/etc.) within the Faculty.4.3.1. Having a brainstorming session within the Faculty Administrative Council to find out what can be done next.ST
TARGET 4.4: Finding out mechanisms to get the involvement / participation of the staff and students for the improvements of the physical conditions.

4.4.1. Making a research to find out the satisfaction level of the staff from the physical conditions of the Faculty.

4.4.2. Making a research to find out the satisfaction level of the students from the physical conditions of the Faculty.

SG5Developing and implementing strategies to promote the Faculty.TARGET 5.1: Designing and producing promotion objects by using the Faculty events, student projects, etc.

5.1.1. Having some regularly produced promotion objects.

5.1.2. Having some workshops organized for the purpose of promotion object production within certain Faculty events such as Design Week.




TARGET 5.2: Establishing a Faculty Newsletter.

5.2.1. Assigning a committee of volunteering people for the Faculty Newsletter.

5.2.2. Designing the Faculty Newsletter.

TARGET 5.3: Continuing the efforts to improve the Faculty Web Page – to be more visible.

5.3.1. Making the new web-site open for the staff as much as possible.

5.3.2. Having one person following up the web-site in each unit connected to the Faculty.




TARGET 5.4: Using the social media (facebook, tweeter, etc.) more effectively.

5.4.1. Encourage our staff, students and graduates to promote our Faculty through social media.

5.4.2. Make regular announcements about our Faculty in social media.

TARGET 5.5: Using the printed and visual media more efficiently and effectively.

5.5.1. Producing articles for the local newspapers in a systematic and regular way.

5.5.2. Having TV programs in the local TV channels in a systematic and regular way.

5.5.3. Following up the agenda and creating the agenda.





SG6Continuing the efforts for the motivation of students and staff to sustain appreciation and encouragement in the Faculty.TARGET 6.1: Sustaining transparent management.

6.1.1. Having the students' representative in the Faculty Council and Faculty Administrative Council meetings.

6.1.2. Sharing Faculty Council and Faculty Administrative Council meeting decisions with the staff through e-kurul – the official web page of the University.

6.1.3. Making assignment of duties after asking if there are any volunteering persons for that duty within the staff.

6.1.4. Informing Faculty Administrative Council about the non-confidential decisions given in the University Council.

TARGET 6.2: Creating/enhancing the overall favorable conditions for working, learning and research.

6.2.1. Keeping the physical environment acceptable for working.

6.2.2. Having seminars about academic ethics.

6.2.3. Having academic rituals applied within the Faculty. (Keeping consistency in academic progress in activities such as juries, special events, etc.)

6.2.4. Encouraging student centered education.

TARGET 6.3: Continuing to integrate social and educational activities (e.g. Design Week) as a part of the curricula.

6.3.1. Supporting Departments to have honor and high-honor ceremonies as a social activity.

6.3.2. Having the beginning of the graduation ceremonies within the Faculty.

6.3.3. Continuing Design Week as a tradition.

6.3.4. Encourage the Departments to place the world-wise accepted days (World Heritage Day, World Architecture/Interior Architecture Day, etc.) on their calendar in terms of placing awareness in education.

TARGET 6.4: Improving academic environment as an incentive for academic development. (in parallel to Target 6.2)

6.4.1. Organizing seminars, conferences, panels, exhibitions etc. within the Faculty.

6.4.2. Inviting scholars from international institutions to give seminars, attend juries etc.

6.4.3. Encouraging students to take part in student competitions.

TARGET 6.5: Organizing regular meetings with staff and students to get their views about the Faculty.

6.5.1. Encouraging staff to get the views of students while designing changes in their courses.

6.5.2. Making staff to take part in any reorganization of Faculty administration.

SG7Increasing cooperation with the other academic bodies at national and international levels.TARGET 7.1: Further-developing international academic agreements and improving communication with other schools of design and architecture that would provide exchange programs for our graduate and undergraduate students as well as for our faculty members.

7.1.1. Activating the existing agreements by organizing some collaborative events.

7.2.1. Encouraging Departments to open all new post-graduate programs as joint programs with other universities.

TARGET 7.3: Setting up the framework for departments to run some parallel courses with others.

7.3.1. Encouraging Departments to run some studios in a parallel manner with different departments of the Faculty and/or with different universities.

7.3.2. Encouraging Departments to have final exhibitions of some courses together.

7.3.3. Encouraging Departments to increase the number of common elective courses.

TARGET 7.4: Organizing joint academic events, seminars, workshops and exhibitions, etc. with other academic bodies.

7.4.1. Inviting the academic bodies we already have agreements, to organize joint academic events.

7.4.2. Inviting the schools in North and South Cyprus to organize some joint academic events.

7.4.3. Taking part in the academic events of other schools in a systematic way.

7.4.4. Encouraging academic staff to organize joint academic events with other academic bodies.

TARGET 7.5: Encouraging and supporting academic staff to be involved in the advisory / scientific committees of international events and or attend juries in other Faculties.

8.1.1. Encouraging / supporting Departments to invite academics from other Faculties / disciplines to our courses as lecturers / guest lecturers / co-lecturers where appropriate.

9.1.1. Organizing joint events / research activities / projects with the Chambers of Architects / Interior Architects, and other national or international professional bodies.

TARGET 9.2: Encouraging Departments to revise their course contents in order to increase their relationship with the industry and/or the sector.

9.2.1. Having a more active relationship with TEKNOPARK.

9.2.2. Providing a relationship between circulating capital projects and education.

9.2.3. Asking Departments to increase the number of site visits within the courses they run.

9.2.4. Setting up a more active collaboration with the private sector / industry in related fields.





TARGET 9.3: Inviting scholars for seminars, juries, etc. from various international institutions with high reputation, to set up institutional collaborations in the future.

9.3.1. Encouraging the centers connected to the Faculty to invite scholars from international institutions for seminars, conferences.

9.3.2. Encouraging the Departments to invite scholars from various international institutions for the design juries.  

SG10Increasing service to society.TARGET 10.1: Supporting the community, city and country and strengthening relationships between local community and university.

10.1.1. Having some academic events within the city.

10.1.2. Organizing joint events / research projects / projects with the municipality / governmental bodies / NGOs.

10.1.3. Following up the environmental and architectural problems within the country and taking actions to solve these problems.

10.1.4. Using all types of media effectively.

TARGET 10.2: Strengthening the relations of the Faculty with the practical professional life.

10.2.1. Having a continuous relationship with the Chamber of Architects / Interior Architects / City Planners.

10.2.2. Encouraging Departments to have successful architects and interior designers as part-time teaching staff in the design studios.

10.2.3.  Having a continuous communication and collaboration with pioneer architectural / design offices.

TARGET 10.3: Encouraging Departments to arrange short-term courses and certificate programs for public, university staff and students.

10.3.1. Working together with EMU Continuous Education Center (DAÜSEM) where appropriate in organizing seminars, courses, certificate programs.

10.3.2. Organizing courses, seminars under the umbrella of circulating capital unit of the Faculty.

TARGET 10.4: Promoting research-theory/practice integration in education through community oriented projects.

10.4.1. Encouraging academic staff to relate research and design courses to each other to address the community.

10.4.2. Informing public about the potential of our Faculty for developing solutions to certain community-related environmental problems.

TARGET 10.5: Increasing the amount of contributions to the enhancement of the built   environment through projects and research.

10.5.1. Activating the Circulating Capital Unit of the Faculty.

10.5.2. Encouraging academic staff to make research under TEKNOPARK.

TARGET 10.6: Providing regular evaluations through written/visual media for urbanization and building activities within the country.

10.6.1. Following up the problems of urbanization and built environment.

10.6.2. Making declarations to visual and written media whenever there is a problem of urbanization or built environment.
